Hurley and Jordache

I don't know why I'm posting this, but Elizabeth Hurely is now the new campaign model for Jordache jeans. Weren't those the jeans that girls wore when I was in grade school? "With success as an actress, model, business woman and mother, Liz represents everything the Jordache brand is about. We chose her because she is the true modern woman." The professional poser will be pimping out the '70s denim brand's Vintage line, as well as the new Legacy line, the latter of which will be available exclusively at Macy's nationwide.

Crusader Knights

Check out the site for Swordplay LA. There's a great range of characters from Zorro, Pirates of the Caribbean, LOTR, Gladiator, and even Star Wars. Some of the costumes and characters are cheezy, but overall, I'd be excited if I was seven years old and these guys came to my Birthday party. Here's the link.

Movie Title Pages

Check out this great gallery of screen captures of movie title pages, and tons of them. The thing here is that a designer worked and overworked a single frame, to create a 'lock-up' of the film title and it's a great education and an inspiration to see them all in one place. Link.

Chinese Dwarf Convention

"Six adults who are suffering from short stature pose for a group photo at a hospital in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu province July 23, 2006. 48 short adults from acorss China get together in the city, discussing concerns over their disease and considering helping those who are distressed by their stature. A dwarf club is also founded, which is the first of its kind in China." I find it hard to believe that all these people are "adults", I can see the two women but the guy on the far right really looks like a little kid. I mean what's up with the their clothes? If you don't want everyone to think your a kid, don't dress like one right? This seems like some strange Chinese publicity stunt, but to what end?

Art Kills!

Check out this giant inflatable sculpture that killed two women and injured many others when it suddenly lifted 30 ft. off the ground. The sculpture allowed viewers to enter the structure and thus the injuries occured as the sculpture crashed back down to earth. Read more here.

Back from CON!

Got back from Comic-Con last night. Had a blast! My legs hurt from traipsing up and down the convention floor. Jim-Smash proved to be an excellent guide. Also took a side trip to Mexico on Sunday with T-Rex and Angie, blew through Tijuana and landed in Rosarito, just in time for the tomato throwing festival. I'll throw up some pics of the bordertown beaches when I get a chance. And the image here is by choc_orange, his blog his here.

off to comic-con!

Children of Men

This movie is yet another speculative sci-fi flick, with the story taking place a few years in the future. For now, it looks just okay to me, with perhaps the best performance coming from a hippified Michael Cain. But I do like director, Alfonso Cuaron's movies, so this could be good. The film is based on the book of the same name by P.D. James, where "The world's youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set in and around a dystopian London fractious with violence and warring nationalistic sects, Children of Men follows the unexpected discovery of a lone pregnant woman and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety and restore faith for a future beyond those presently on Earth." Watch the trailer here. Oh yeah, if you like this kind of story then you should really check out the graphic novel, Y: The Last Man

Vidalia

Check out Vidalia's fun flickr stream. She is a cool L.A. hipster with a sense of humor. She has a bunch of photos of her Mr. T doll going places and hanging out with weird people. She even has a photo of Mr. T holding Mr. T... crazy, I tell ya. Enjoy! link

Monsterism

Artist Pete Fowler has an incredible site. His galleries are actual galleries, meaning there's a whole virtual world in there. Truly inspiring and fun.... Go play! link

Dragon Robot

I'm guessing this is some kind of Japanese amusement park... The clip is pretty sweet. The dragon is cool, but keep watching for a surprise ending. link

Cheeseburger trick

Unfortunately this magic trick isn't done by the guy in the photo, but instead is a Japanese magician doing some pretty incredible "street magic". You might want to watch this one twice! link

Milky Way

You’re looking at the heart of your own galaxy with X-ray specs. This photograph was captured by NASA’s Chandra X-Ray observatory, and shows the three massive star clusters that surround the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. These star clusters have so many large, bright stars that the whole area blazes in the X-ray spectrum. This photo shows 1 million seconds of accumulated observing time by Chandra of these mysterious region of our galaxy.

Disney Update

Over at Mice Age, Al Lutz has written yet another great Disney update. This time his update includes a "behind the scenes" view of Lindsay Lohan's 20th birthday party held at the park. The well known party girl and her group apparently pissed off a lot of the "crew members" as they got bombed from ride to ride. Read about it and more here

More fun toys

Super Nerds

In honor of Comic-Con this week... let's take a look at what could've been... Patton Oswalt & Brian Posehn star in a show about two nerds who work in a comic book store. This is the failed pilot episode shot for Comedy Central back in 2000.

The Touch

Whoa... Check this out, it's a music video for Stan Bush's The Touch, a terrible song from the soundtrack to 1986's Transformers: The Movie. This video is hilarious, and will hurt your brain at the same time. If the tune sounds familiar, it's because Mark Wahlberg repopularized it in Boogie Nights. Go here to watch that classic scene, in which Dirk Diggler puts his all into the tune while Michael Penn tries to keep a straight face. link

The world is cruel...

But it can be so damn funny. Much like the infamous "star wars" kid, China has a kid known as "fatty" whose picture has been photoshoped many times over. It's kinda sad, but the pictures are amusing. For more photoshop magic click here and then click on the numbers below the photo.

Trippy Screen Toy

Not sure what the purpose of this is, but it seem to be a cool kaleidoscope program. You can select various cursors at the bottom of the page, each creating a different set of patterns and colors. As you move the cursor around the page, strange things happen. Try it!

Chinese Transformer

R.I.P Mopie

Mopie, a silverback western lowland gorilla at the Zoo, died July 3 during routine social introductions between the two groups of gorillas at the Great Ape House. In 1998, he was diagnosed with fibrosing cardiomyopathy, a chronic disease of the heart muscle that results in its decreased ability to pump blood throughout the body. In the days before his death, he was very active and was not showing signs of illness. It is not yet clear the extent to which his cardiomyopathy contributed to his death. Zoo pathologists will conduct a necropsy on Mopie, as is done on all Zoo animals upon death, to determine information that may clarify the cause of death.

Zidane Speaks!

PARIS - French soccer star Zinedine Zidane apologized for head-butting an Italian opponent during the World Cup final, saying Wednesday that he was provoked by insults about his mother and sister. "I apologize, to all the children" who watched the match Sunday, Zidane said in his first, highly-awaited comments about the act of violence that marked the end of his career. Oh yeah, I love the way he's wearing his jacket, like a wounded commando.

Terra Kuroda

Artist, Terra Kuroda, has a brand new web site. The L.A. based artist has a lot of great work that challenges the viewer by not just presenting them with art, but by creating an art experience. Her work often inhabits the physical space of the viewer, and literally incorporates "the moment" of reception. Click here to check her work out.

Sundial Billboard

Ad agency Leo Burnett dreamed up this idea for a McDonald's billboard that takes us fast food junkies back to the ancient days of sundials, casting a shadow on a cup of McCoffee at 6 a.m., and moving along to other various delectable breakfast items until 11, when those scrumptious McDonald's fries are given the nod by the shadowy arches. The billboard went up last friday in Chicago and will stay there for a month, after that the earth will have moved too much to keep the sundial working.

Phoneticontrol

Outsider artist or just robot enthusiast, Phoneticontrol has some cool bot stickers and designs, check out his flickr pics here.

Kagan McLeod

I really dig the designs of Kagan McLeod, not sure if he is an immortal (Highlander ref). But I do know he likes drawing Immortals. Apparently, Kagan is a huge fan of the kung fu and will publish a kick ass graphic novel called "Infinite Kung Fu" (2007). His character designs for the forth coming book are on his website amongst a whole slew of other great illustrations. Also, he has done some work for a remix kung fu DVD series called "Kung Faux", that enlists American actors to voice old kung fu movies that have been re-edited, which can be bought here.

Ms. Pac Man playing Chimp

This is a cool clip of a chimp playing Ms. Pac Man. I love the high fives at the end too. link

Wu Yulu

I have previoulsly posted about this eccentric Chinese farmer who builds robots, but here is a recent article about him selling off his "5th son". link

Lazy Sunday UK

I know they're a lot of "Lazy Sunday" (the rap from SNL) immitations out there, some not so funny or well shot. But this British response to the clip is pretty good. It's called "We Drink Tea". Check it out, link.

Etch-a-Sketch Art

Remember your Etch-a-Sketch as a kid? Pretty fun stuff. I use to be able to draw stuff, but the images were blocky and rough. Now check out the work of George Vlosich, a 27 year old wonder kid at the Etch-a-sketch. With tons of patience he creates these quirky pop art pieces. I personally, love his subject matter, sport heroes and celebrities. Actually, George is quite the celebrity hound as you will see in his "celebrities" section. Have a look see, here
