No. 3 - The Sorceress, I have to give a big individual shout out to this one, nicely done (of course we know who wins Masters of the Universe group costume), No.2 - Princess Fiona, this gal stands outside Chinese Mann's Theater in Hollywood, great costume (and its not a mask!) No. 1 - Hell Boy kid... enough said, bad ass.

Sex Pistols @ the Roxy Oct. 25th

Last night I had the privilege of seeing the Sex Pistols play their first ever L.A. club show. I had won the tickets from our local radio station, Indie 103.1, where Pistols guitarist, Steve Jones broadcasts his radio show. I had also never seen a show on the Sunset Strip, so I was really pleased to find the Roxy a great room for a show. I couldn't believe how small the the space was, and I was able to get a spot 3-4 feet away from the stage. After standing 40 minutes and watching the mostly gray haired audience wait in anticipation, I dodged a quick skirmish between two meat heads, that left one guy ejected. I couldn't help but think how classic, a fight at a Pistols show, only these weren't street punks or hooligans, these guys were Hollywood actor wannabes. I could only laugh. Finally, up in the DJ booth, Lemmy from Motorhead came out to watch the show, and I knew the band was about to play. The lights went out, and an ode to England played, ending with a triumphant crescendo. The curtain pulled back to reveal the 50 year old rockers blasting out "Holiday in the Sun". Johny Lydon is a natural performer, with deadly piercing eyes and a scowl made for intimidation. Not to mention, he's missing a few teeth (must be a British thing). Lydon looked odd drinking champagne from the bottle in his Long white tunic, buttons stripped off and replaced with safety pins. Overall, the music was good, and the Pistols played a tight one hour set of all their songs, and a few of their known covers, "Stepping Stone"... where Lydon tried to get political stating her couldn't stand anymore "Republican Bullshit". He was also quick to point out that the Pistols "were the ones to start this shit, not the Ramones and the like..." At one point a fan jumped up on stage, and the Pistols security guy, who completely reminded me of the Ben Kingsly character in "Sexy Beast" rushed over to rip the chubby hispanic girl off of Steve Jones. And then finally, after a set of playing for more or less bulky actor types desperate to relive some kind of punk rock pit nostalgia, Lydon laid into the guy who threw a beer at him, calling him out and saying "If you ever do that again, I will kill you...you fucking coward". And then, predictably, the band launched into a rousing version of "Anarchy in the U.K." Lydon closed with the immortal words, "Fuck All!" and the show was over.

Kurt Cobain Film

Variety is reporting that the book Heavier Than Heaven has been optioned and screenwirter David Benioff has been hired to write it. I have been wanting to see a project like this for some time. But I am skeptical, because Courtney is producing and she also had a hand in the creation of the book. But none the less, I think it could be good. Rumor is, that Courtney would like to see Ewan McGregor play Kurt, but fans think Joe Anderson (Across the Universe) pictured here, would be a good fit. I don't know about him myself, but he does seem to be the right age, and does have that Kurt look. Any thoughts?

Tale of two Blacks

I went to check out "Black Francis" the other night, and was treated to some great new songs. Frank cranked out his new "rock opera" Bluefinger, which is a concept album of sorts, as it is based on the life and death of Dutch artist/musician Herman Broot. They're are some great tunes on the new one including threshold aprehension. which sounds a great deal like a Pixies song, particularly because of the female backing vocals. As a bonus, we got a celebrity Frank Black Fan sighting as, the other Black, Jack Black was there sporting a blonde short hair-do, for his upcoming film "Tropical Thunder".

Moz in Hollywood

Finally saw the great Moz, Saturday night at the world famous Hollywood Palladium. What a fun show, one of the best, I've seen in a very long time. Morrissey is a world class performer. He did everything right, he had the audience screaming for more. Great band, and after a 10 night residency, his voice still sounded good, pretty sweet.

Desert Trip

Last weekend I was lucky enough to get to spend some time with the family and check out Palm Springs. PS is an interesting town in the desert, and one of it's most unique attributes is the fact that you can ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway from the bottom of the desert floor, 8,000 ft up into the San Jacinto Mountains. That's my expression, as I fly up that massive piece of granite. Good times.

Yeah, I'm back.....

No, these kids aren't celebrating my return, but I am. Friday, on the way to work, my car died, right as I was crossing a busy street! WHEW, close call... Anyway, all good, and I got a "free" tow from triple A to my mechanic. Had a relaxing time this weekend... and ready to roll this week. The shooting company is in Denver for two weeks, so I should have a better opportunity to get some blogging done.

The Great World of Sound

I heard about this new Indie picture about these traveling "A&R" guys who try to scam musicians out of money for "recording contracts". It seem like this is a bit similar to the Borat style, because the A&R guys are actors but the musicians don't know they are being taped for a film. The results seem pretty funny, and a bit cruel, but funny... To watch the trailer and clips go here.

New Van Halen

I'm not a huge Van Halen fan, but when I saw these pics, I had to post'em. That there is the new look of VH, David Lee Roth at 52 is ripped (with short hair) and the new bass player, Wolfgang Van Halen, is a pudgy long haired 16 year old. Strange. But apparently they rock... go figure.

Into the Wild

Over the weekend I got to see an exceptional new film by director Sean Penn called Into the Wild. I had read the book years ago, and I am pleased to say that this is one of those rare treats where the film is as good, if not better than the book. The film is one of those movies where you come out feeling moved, changed by the experience. This tale of a young college graduate who goes on a journey of self-exploration and who eventually finds himself trapped in an old bus in Alaska, is a poignant true story. The film operates as a road movie, and is beautifully shot, capturing the most natural of moments. The acting here is top notch, and I look for it to be remembered at Oscar time. Emille Hirsch simply embodies this character so thoroughly that he flows in and out of scenes seamlessly. If this movie comes to your local theater, check it out. website
