Stephen Gaghan

I got to meet Oscar award winng screenwriter/dirctor Stephen Gaghan (Traffic/Syriana) today. He was really great, down to earth, and fairly witty. He is appearing on an episode of Entrourage and we went to ask him about his writers office and what kinds of things he has in it. He spoke frankly, and was surprisingly nonchalant about the whereabouts of his Oscar. He told us about his writing tablets he uses to make notes in, and even showed us one that he was using for his new film, Blink. Anyhow, a very cool experience, so look for Stephen on an a upcoming episode of Entourage Season 4.

Chinese New Year

Last Sunday night was Chinese New Year, if you had lived in China you would have watched this on TV... and probably sung along.

Knocked Up

Three months out, the Knocked Up trailer has been released. I'm not sure if I hadn't worked on the show how I would feel about the trailer. From what I know, it definitely seems like they're playing up the "heart" and not the laughs in the trailer, because don't be fooled, there is a lot of gross out funny humor in this one. I have read the script, but that doesn't mean much because a lot the film was improvised, so I'm sure the jokes will be new to me. I really admired, how Seth Rogen and best his best friend Evan Goldberg have casually planted an anchor in the comedy world, writing and producing on both Knocked Up and the teen/slacker comedy Super Bad. I will say that my experience with Judd Apatow was very limited, but ultimately disappointing. I thought Judd would be the kind of director who is bright and friendlly with everyone, but he wasn't. But it seems like he's doing something right, as I believe this one will play to big audiences come June 1. Check out the trailer for yourself, here.

Milli Vanilli: The Movie

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to make a film about Milli Vanilli, the duo that rose to the top of the pop charts and fell just as quickly when they were exposed as frauds. Jeff Nathanson will write the script and direct the film. Kathleen Kennedy will produce. Nathanson, who presented a sympathetic look at a check forger in "Catch Me if You Can," became intrigued with the notion of taking a similar tack on the music industry tale. He has secured the cooperation of Fabrice Morvan, as well as the estate of Rob Pilatus, who died in 1998 as the pair were attempting a comeback.

Space Invader

Fox Atomic is going cosmic, snapping up comedy spec "Space Invader" with Will Arnett attached to star and produce along with Peter Principato and Paul Young through their Principato Young Entertainment shingle. Space station-set story, penned by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger, centers on a love triangle. The writing team, who developed the script with Arnett, began working on the script months before the recent arrest of astronaut Lisa Nowak on charges that she tried to murder a woman she believed was her rival for a Space Shuttle pilot.

Crying Baby Competition

It's always a delight to see a grown man yell at an infant until, frightened and confused, it bursts into tears. At this traditional 'konaki' (crying) sumo festival pairs of babies under one year old are pitted against each other. The babies are placed facing each other and the temple priest then stands between them and shouts and waves at them until one child cries. Surprisingly this is one occasion when it pays to be a cry baby - for the child who cries first (or loudest if the poor little things burst into tears simultaneously) is proclaimed the winner of the bout! The delighted parents then hoist the distressed child aloft to face another trauma - a battery of camera flashes.

Of course there is always the odd child who refuses to play by the rules and confounds everyone by either falling asleep or giggling. Based on the old Japanese proverb that 'crying babies grow fast', the louder the child wails, the more the gods are thought to have blessed the child with good health. This extraordinary ritual has a history of at least 400 years and is thought to have originated as a service to honour a child priest who lived at the temple long ago

Beijing is trying to repress spitting, littering and milling crowds around bus stops and subway stations as the Olympics approach. People spitting in the streets in Beijing will be fined up to 50 yuan (about US$6.5) in an effort to improve citizens' behavior ahead of the Olympics, an official said Wednesday. The capital city has sought to enrol the media and famous people in its efforts to build a more civilized city for the Olympics, and devised punishment and reward schemes and slogans for city districts. "We want to raise citizens' awareness of civilized behavior, not just fine them," Zhang said.

The Eternal Embrace

Archaeologists in Italy have discovered a couple buried 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, hugging each other.
"It's an extraordinary case," said Elena Menotti, who led the team on their dig near the northern city of Mantova.
"There has not been a double burial found in the Neolithic period, much less two people hugging - and they really are hugging."
Menotti said she believed the two, almost certainly a man and a woman although that needs to be confirmed, died young because their teeth were mostly intact and not worn down.
A laboratory will now try to determine the couple's age at the time of death and how long they had been buried.

If you saw the Halftime show, then you may have heard Prince play a FooFighters song, at the time I thought it was because he was a fan. But really it was a "fuck you", because Prince had been upset when Grohl covered Prince's "Darling Nikki".
"Prince was not too charmed with the Foo Fighters covering one of his songs. Prince got back at them by covering Best of You, preceded by the classic All along the Watchtower. Watchtower was originally a Bob Dylan song, but after Jimi Hendix covered it, the song will always be remembered by Jimi Hendix' version. By starting with Watchtower, Prince put his cover of Best of You in that context, suggesting that from now on that song will be remembered by his interpretation."

Stardust

I'm not real familiar with Gaiman's work, and perhaps this is a good story, but this picture looks terrible. Ah, the goat chariot!

Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale in the tradition of The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story. Neil Gaiman, creator of the darkly elegant Sandman comics, tells the story of young Tristran Thorn and his adventures in the land of Faerie. One fateful night, Tristran promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the Wall that stands between their rural English town (called, appropriately, Wall) and the Faerie realm. No one ever ventures beyond the Wall except to attend an enchanted flea market that is held every nine years (and during which, unbeknownst to him, Tristran was conceived).
