Milky Way

You’re looking at the heart of your own galaxy with X-ray specs. This photograph was captured by NASA’s Chandra X-Ray observatory, and shows the three massive star clusters that surround the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. These star clusters have so many large, bright stars that the whole area blazes in the X-ray spectrum. This photo shows 1 million seconds of accumulated observing time by Chandra of these mysterious region of our galaxy.

Disney Update

Over at Mice Age, Al Lutz has written yet another great Disney update. This time his update includes a "behind the scenes" view of Lindsay Lohan's 20th birthday party held at the park. The well known party girl and her group apparently pissed off a lot of the "crew members" as they got bombed from ride to ride. Read about it and more here

The Touch

Whoa... Check this out, it's a music video for Stan Bush's The Touch, a terrible song from the soundtrack to 1986's Transformers: The Movie. This video is hilarious, and will hurt your brain at the same time. If the tune sounds familiar, it's because Mark Wahlberg repopularized it in Boogie Nights. R.I.P Mopie

Mopie, a silverback western lowland gorilla at the Zoo, died July 3 during routine social introductions between the two groups of gorillas at the Great Ape House. In 1998, he was diagnosed with fibrosing cardiomyopathy, a chronic disease of the heart muscle that results in its decreased ability to pump blood throughout the body. In the days before his death, he was very active and was not showing signs of illness. It is not yet clear the extent to which his cardiomyopathy contributed to his death. Zoo pathologists will conduct a necropsy on Mopie, as is done on all Zoo animals upon death, to determine information that may clarify the cause of death.

Zidane Speaks!

PARIS - French soccer star Zinedine Zidane apologized for head-butting an Italian opponent during the World Cup final, saying Wednesday that he was provoked by insults about his mother and sister. "I apologize, to all the children" who watched the match Sunday, Zidane said in his first, highly-awaited comments about the act of violence that marked the end of his career. Oh yeah, I love the way he's wearing his jacket, like a wounded commando.

Artist, Terra Kuroda, has a brand new web site. The L.A. based artist has a lot of great work that challenges the viewer by not just presenting them with art, but by creating an art experience. Her work often inhabits the physical space of the viewer, and literally incorporates "the moment" of reception. Click here to check her work out.

Sundial Billboard

Ad agency Leo Burnett dreamed up this idea for a McDonald's billboard that takes us fast food junkies back to the ancient days of sundials, casting a shadow on a cup of McCoffee at 6 a.m., and moving along to other various delectable breakfast items until 11, when those scrumptious McDonald's fries are given the nod by the shadowy arches. The billboard went up last friday in Chicago and will stay there for a month, after that the earth will have moved too much to keep the sundial working.

Kagan McLeod

I really dig the designs of Kagan McLeod, not sure if he is an immortal (Highlander ref). But I do know he likes drawing Immortals. Apparently, Kagan is a huge fan of the kung fu and will publish a kick ass graphic novel called "Infinite Kung Fu" (2007). His character designs for the forth coming book are on his website amongst a whole slew of other great illustrations. Also, he has done some work for a remix kung fu DVD series called "Kung Faux", that enlists American actors to voice old kung fu movies that have been re-edited, which can be bought here.

Etch-a-Sketch Art

Remember your Etch-a-Sketch as a kid? Pretty fun stuff. I use to be able to draw stuff, but the images were blocky and rough. Now check out the work of George Vlosich, a 27 year old wonder kid at the Etch-a-sketch. With tons of patience he creates these quirky pop art pieces. The Beatles in Vegas

I just found out that starting this week a new Cirque de Soleil show has opened in the Mirage, replacing the Siegfried and Roy show. And this new show is called The Beatles in Vegas, uh, I mean "The Beatles: Love". I'm not sure what to make of these (Cirque) productions. I have only seen one, "Mystere" at Treasure Island, and it was pretty entertaining. By the way that show will be featured in the film I'm working on, essentially it appears as one big gag. Rotting Shark

The decompostion of artist Damien Hirst's iconic work, "The physical impossibility of death in the mind of someone living" poses some interesting questions about the authenticity of contemporary art work, such as, is it the same work of art, if it is entirely replaced by the artist? Here's a bit of what's happening to Damien's "preserved" shark piece, "The animal suspended in formaldehyde has deteriorated dramatically to the naked eye since it was first unveiled at the Saatchi Gallery in 1992 because of the way it was preserved by the artist. The solution which surrounds it is murky, the skin of the animal is showing considerable signs of wear and tear, and the shark itself has changed shape." So if he replaces the shark, is it the same piece? Read this article to find out more here.
