Sundial Billboard

Ad agency Leo Burnett dreamed up this idea for a McDonald's billboard that takes us fast food junkies back to the ancient days of sundials, casting a shadow on a cup of McCoffee at 6 a.m., and moving along to other various delectable breakfast items until 11, when those scrumptious McDonald's fries are given the nod by the shadowy arches. The billboard went up last friday in Chicago and will stay there for a month, after that the earth will have moved too much to keep the sundial working.

Phoneticontrol

Kagan McLeod

I really dig the designs of Kagan McLeod, not sure if he is an immortal (Highlander ref). But I do know he likes drawing Immortals. Apparently, Kagan is a huge fan of the kung fu and will publish a kick ass graphic novel called "Infinite Kung Fu" (2007). His character designs for the forth coming book are on his website amongst a whole slew of other great illustrations. Also, he has done some work for a remix kung fu DVD series called "Kung Faux", that enlists American actors to voice old kung fu movies that have been re-edited, which can be bought here.

Ms. Pac Man playing Chimp

This is a cool clip of a chimp playing Ms. Pac Man. I love the high fives at the end too. link

Etch-a-Sketch Art

Remember your Etch-a-Sketch as a kid? Pretty fun stuff. I use to be able to draw stuff, but the images were blocky and rough. Now check out the work of George Vlosich, a 27 year old wonder kid at the Etch-a-sketch. With tons of patience he creates these quirky pop art pieces. I personally, love his subject matter, sport heroes and celebrities. Actually, George is quite the celebrity hound as you will see in his "celebrities" section. Have a look see, here

Tahoe Freeloader

"In this photo provided by Jerry Patterson, a bear cub sits in a vintage red Buick convertible in a Lake Tahoe neighborhood, in Stateline, Nev., in this Sunday, July 2, 2006 file photo. The bear drew a crowd of spectators as it munched on barbecue-chicken-and-jalapeno pizza in the back seat of the 1964 Buick Skylark. It also apparently washed it down with a swig of a Jack Daniel's mixer, an Absolut vodka and tonic, and a beer taken from a cooler, the vehicle's owner said. "[AP]

Chinese Prison Food

That's it, just thought you should know.

The Beatles in Vegas

I just found out that starting this week a new Cirque de Soleil show has opened in the Mirage, replacing the Siegfried and Roy show. And this new show is called The Beatles in Vegas, uh, I mean "The Beatles: Love". I'm not sure what to make of these (Cirque) productions. I have only seen one, "Mystere" at Treasure Island, and it was pretty entertaining. By the way that show will be featured in the film I'm working on, essentially it appears as one big gag. Anyhow, click here to view the website and see images of the show, and here to read a review that gives the show five stars.

Francis Bean

I don't know why, but the other day I was thinking about Kurt Cobain, and was wondering about his daughter Francis Bean. Well, wouldn't you know she's down the street in Beverly Hills, with her crazy mother. Anyway, here are some pics of fourteen year old "Bean" playing with her dogs. link

Relax

Lauren Berke

Nice style, very conscious of script and design, with easy going graphic drawings. I really like her paintings, and her simple but eloquent "digitally colored" works. link

Rotting Shark

The decompostion of artist Damien Hirst's iconic work, "The physical impossibility of death in the mind of someone living" poses some interesting questions about the authenticity of contemporary art work, such as, is it the same work of art, if it is entirely replaced by the artist? Here's a bit of what's happening to Damien's "preserved" shark piece, "The animal suspended in formaldehyde has deteriorated dramatically to the naked eye since it was first unveiled at the Saatchi Gallery in 1992 because of the way it was preserved by the artist. The solution which surrounds it is murky, the skin of the animal is showing considerable signs of wear and tear, and the shark itself has changed shape." So if he replaces the shark, is it the same piece? Read this article to find out more here.

Transformers

Had to post this "Bumble Bee" image from the upcoming Micheal Bay film, Transformers. I believe the head of the robot is facing down, but you can get a sense of scale and size of these "transformers". Click here for more behind the scenes info and images regarding the film.

Dragon Tiger Gate

"The Gate of Dragon and Tiger, created by media magnate Tony Wong Yuk-long in the 1970s, was a milestone in the history of Hong Kong comics. More than one generation of Chinese youngsters have been mesmerized by its tales of heroism and heart-pounding martial arts scenes. Inspired by the basic human values that the series upholds, the film revisits a bygone era, where back street boys can fight for justice in the community. While the spectacular action will appeal to Chinese and international audiences, the film is also an attempt to rekindle the passion and vitality lost in a mercenary and morally ambiguous society." Check the trailer, here!

Melissa Thorne

Melissa Thorne is a painter of meticulous care. She creates slick flat facsimiles of Afghan blankets. Her paintings continue the post modernist style of "grid painting" but instead of creating cold detached linear grids, her work brings the sense of hand craft, domesticity, and humor to the forefront. The images here don't do the work justice, but imagine the patience it takes to replicate the intricate woven pieces she uses as her subject. Check out Melissa's work here. Also, Melissa plays in a band called Bedroom walls, and although I don't know much about them, I do know they are getting a lot of "buzz" here in L.A.

Jason Hackenworth

Jason Hackenworth is one of those artists that make you smile, and say to yourself, "How did he come up with that?". He is a sculptor of balloons, and not your typical children's birthday party balloons either. He creates what he calls the "Megamite" which he claims to be an anemone, a creature from the deepest reaches of your id. Despite how it looks, these are serious art sculptures and have been shown at such prestigious art events as the Venice Biennale. To get an idea of Hackenworth's work, both in size and scope, go here.

Marcos is a designer/illustrator who's work is pretty cool. You may have seen his work on the "lava life" billboards. Many of his Egon Schiele inspired characters inhabit futuristic posh spaces. Check out his stylistic renderings here.

Golden Monkeys

This poor guy is living in a crappy zoo in Wuhan China. He's too hot, so the zoo keeper gives him some ice and tangerines. Golden Monkeys are an endangered species and are oh so cute as babies, as evident here, take a look.

Well, the young duo known for their lipsyncing abilities the world over, has graduated this week, from Art School no less. Yes, the two viral video kings, are both sculptors. Plus they mug for their cameras at the opening of their senior show, the text is in Chinese, but they're some great pics. BD Boys. And click here to watch their now famous videos!

Kozyndan

I like the work of KozynDan (Kozy and Dan) a two person design team, that have some great illustrations. They have a keen sense of fusing Asian pop imagery with that of the everyday. Definitely worth a peek through their artwork section, they're are some real gems in there. This image graced the cover of the awesome magazine Giant Robot! And yes, those are falling bunnies coming from the wave's crest! Link!

Connie Sings

I don't follow Connie Chung, but apparently she had a cable show which was cancelled, who knew? So to go out with a bang, she decided to leave her viewers with a special song. I'm sure this is just one big media stunt, but I'll buy in, because at the end of the day, we all get to see Connie making a fool of herself, in style mind you, hence the long white gloves and smiling piano man. Have a look at her performance here.

Robo Love

The Online Times has an article about robots evolving into androids, and the different roles they will play in society.
"People are going to be having sex with robots within five years,” “My guess is that we’ll have conscious machines before 2020,” said Ian Pearson, futurologist-in-residence at BT. “If we put that in a robot, it’s an android. That is an enormous ethical change.” The article goes on to discuss the ethics of our relationships with said androids. Good short read, link

El Pandito

Hippie Ride

Here is a group of Summer Solstice "Naturalists" preparing themselves w/body paint for a nude bike ride around the town. Although this may be a practice run, since the solstice isn't till Wednesday... All in all, not very sexy, but some fun body paints, perhaps best viewed at home though (NC 17). slideshow

No Txt

Check this, an online "magazine" with no text... an all image mag, kinda cool. link

Sand Party

I love this image, I'd like to say that its for the cover of a Chinese Folk Rock band. How great would that be? The Mammas and Pappas, China Style... But really it's an image of some folks receiving "sand therapy" in China's Xing Jiang province. Eh...

This Mortal Coil

Here's what I know, mid-80's 4 AD super group, This Mortal Coil, releases the awesome record "It'll End in Tears" with the exceptional cover song of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren". This song becomes an instant classic, both haunting and beautiful. I believe David Lynch used it in "Lost Highway", and I'm sure it's been used in countless other things (car commercial?). But here is a rare live performance of this now classic cover song. With Liz Cocteau on vocals, this is one beautiful must hear performance. Buckley's raw lyrics and the song's sparse arrangement, make this song complete. Watch it now! And click here if you want to read the song's lyrics, which I totally recommend.
**thank's mr. schiprock!!
